Im Alter von nur 19 Jahren findet sich Billy Lynn als Soldat im Irakkrieg wieder, wo der Tod an jeder Ecke nur darauf wartet, ein neues Opfer zu fordern. Nach einem schrecklichen Feuergefecht werden Billy und seine Kameraden jedoch als Helden der Nation gefeiert und, zurück in den USA, auf eine landesweite Sieges-Tournee geschickt. Die Amerikaner feiern Billys Einheit euphorisch – dabei könnte die pompöse Inszenierung der Tour nicht weiter von der grausamen Realität des Krieges entfernt sein, die auch Billys pazifistische Schwester Kathryn scharf verurteilt. Doch was genau ist im Irak geschehen? Und sind Billy und seine Mitstreiter wirklich die Helden, zu denen sie in der Öffentlichkeit gemacht werden?
