Nel 1794, Victor Frankenstein (Kenneth Branagh) viene recuperato sulla banchisa polare dal capitano Walton (Aidan Quinn) che lo fa portare a bordo della sua nave e ne ascolta il racconto. Frankenstein, dopo una serena infanzia nella natia Svizzera, aveva studiato a Ingolstadt e, stretto amicizia con Henry Clerval (Tom Hulce), si era dedicato alla realizzazione del suo sogno: creare un essere vivente. Riuscitoci, aveva dovuto prendere atto che il mostro (Robert De Niro) gli provocava solo orrore e perciò l’aveva ripudiato. Ma la creatura si era rivelata vendicativa.
